You will participate in a strategic research team, working in one of the ESI research projects, where you develop new capabilities for design and engineering of software-intensive high-tech systems and applications. Most of their time these research teams are working, where the pandemic measurements permit, on the customer premises.

Your work will focus on the continuous development of tools:

• Generative and analytic tools for the analysis of existing (legacy) components of complex software-intensive high-tech systems: obtain insight into the (interface) behaviour of existing components, harnessing the intrinsic knowledge encoded in e.g. the source code of the component and execution traces produced by the component’s code. This to reduce the effort needed for (re-)engineering of existing (legacy) components, significantly reducing project risks, costs and time.
• Performance analysis tooling for the analysis, prediction and optimization of software timing aspects of complex software-intensive high-tech systems: obtain from the software execution traces system-wide insights into the intrinsic interaction of software components and functional behaviour. This to support diagnostic understanding of the software impact on the system dynamics and physics, and to predict and optimize the impact of future software updates. When industrialized, the tooling should significantly reduce the engineering effort of system extensions, reducing project risks, costs and time.

You are keen to advance the tool capabilities by participating in a team of multiple researchers. The team is responsible for designing and implementing proof of concepts of these software-based tools, demonstrating their value in practice, and help bring them into industrial use. Your work will focus mostly on the latter aspect, bringing the (existing) tooling to industrial use.

You have a relevant professional background in software development using open-source solutions. Furthermore, you have a proven track record of at least several years of industrial experience on and strong affinity with:

• Java programming
• Eclipse plug-in development (specifically on EMF and Xtend)
• Model-based methods
• UI development
• Build tool like Maven/Tycho and Jenkins

You’re a developer that can quickly produce prototype tools and design experiments. In general, you opt for integrating solutions from sufficiently supported open source communities instead of developing from scratch.

For your activities you are expected to build up a level of experience with the tool’s fields of application and user needs. Conceptual thinking on system level is a serious pre. You are a goal oriented, self-driven professional with a strong will to deliver quality results. Above all you are a team player. You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team of ESI research fellows, industrial and academic partners, where you closely cooperate with the customer’s product development team at the customer premises.
