Background: Avanti Communications Group plc sells satellite broadband services to telecomms companies which use them to supply residential, enterprise and institutional users. Avanti's first satellite, called HYLAS 1 launched in November 2010 was the first superfast broadband satellite launched in Europe. Avanti's second satellite called HYLAS 2 is fully funded and will launch in Q2 2012. It will extend Avanti's coverage to Africa and the Middle East. HYLAS 3 is currently in design. We are looking for a Software Engineer based at our central London office, whose objectives are to take the software tools supporting Avanti’s Space activities to the next level.

Main duties and responsibilities:
- Integrating diverse network management systems into Avanti's business and operational support systems by the development of XML/RPC/Web service-based mediation layers;
- Addressing requirements, feature requests and usability concerns from a diverse group of people;
- Coaching others and participate in knowledge transfer and handle multiple, complex products / projects;
- Responsibility for leading a focussed area of work drawing on specialist knowledge and skills;
- Enhancing the user interaction of the operations systems into various levels of presentation, access and control for all levels from customer support to senior management;
- Developing and improving interfaces (both human-readable and machine-readable) for presentation/integration with partners, suppliers and end users;
- Performing application testing;
- Producing author, administrator and user manuals;
- Undertaking occasional ad-hoc internal development work.
Skills and Qualifications required:
- B.Sc. Computer Science or equivalent;
- Demonstrable previous experience of non-CMS Drupal Framework implementations;
- Solid understanding of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP;
- Excellent programming skills and experience of software development lifecycle;
- Experience of software architectural design with UML;
- Ability and willingness to work occasionally long hours under pressure;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Ability to manage own workload and prioritise tasks. Skills and Qualifications desired:
- Knowledge of shell scripting;
- Good understanding of TCP/IP networking. Reporting to: Senior Software Architect Note Remuneration will be related to skills and experience. In addition to the above responsibilities, the jobholder is required to perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the supervisor/line manager from time to time.
